Helping poor farmers to increase their incomes by diversifying their products is at the core of our grant making, with a focus always on benefits for women. In villages in Shinyanga district and Kasulu district we gave grants to two women's groups so that they could begin small scale pig farming. We also funded initial training in pig husbandry. Each woman is responsible for constructing a pig house at her family home. She then receives two piglets and veterinary inputs and later gets the services of a happy shared boar. She subsequently returns two piglets to the programme so that new families can benefit and the scheme expands. We know from failed chicken rearing and bee keeping projects that all schemes involving living creatures carry risk and TDT will monitor the progress of these two groups carefully.
