VSO volunteers in Tanzania can apply to TDT under its dedicated ‘Small Grants Scheme’.  The idea is that volunteers can apply if they identify a relatively modest item of expenditure which would ‘unblock’ or enhance their placement, or something that would benefit their community.  Steve and Sue Scorer, volunteers in Lindi, applied for a grant of just £250 and this enabled them to set up a ‘street library’ for children who would otherwise have no access to books. The whole community worked together on the street library, and within five days of opening, it had over 100 members, with more joining each day.  Reactions were very positive, and even though the books are mainly for children, adults were using the library too.  Congratulations to Steve and Sue!

There is a wonderful account of this project and its outcomes on the VSO blog, with great images telling the story – we would encourage all to visit. The VSO Small Grants Scheme has been active for around five years.  Its many worthwhile projects have benefited communities and enhanced the experience and achievements of VSO volunteers.  If you would like to donate directly to the VSO Small Grants scheme, you can do so by donating via MyDonate and adding a message to the effect that the donation is intended for the TDT VSO Small Grants Scheme.  Or view other options on our Donate page.
