VSO Volunteer Chris Takyuka applied for a small grant to support the livelihoods of marginalised women of the Wagogo tribe in the Dodoma Region.
The grant enabled a women’s group to set up a solar shop, within the village of Nzasa, selling solar lights in an area that has no access to electricity. The profits the women make are invested back into the business and they plan to start other small businesses from this solar project.
Additional benefits from this project were identified as encouraging a savings culture and using micro-finance loans to expand their businesses with improvement to life style, education and access to medical care. The chairperson of the women’s group said “On behalf of the Women entrepreneurs group of Nzasa village, I extend my sincere thanks to TDT & VSO for thinking about us, the poorest of the poor”
