Supporting girls’ education is a priority for the trust. When girls live in a hostel close to their secondary school, their examination performance improves and their general wellbeing is enhanced. This is because they avoid wasting time walking long distances from home or rented rooms. As a result, they are less tired and more focused in class. They also avoid a heavy load of domestic work and, more importantly, the unwanted attention of local men and boys.
The grant awarded to the Kilimatinde Girls’ Hostel was used initially to purchase bunk beds, as previously the girls were sleeping on mattresses on the floor, and install window netting to prevent mosquitoes from getting into the dormitory.
An additional grant was provided to complete work on the electricity connection in the hostel and install a new grill security door.
