Grant Approved: Economic Empowerment in Shinyanga
We’re pleased to share that Tanzania Development Trust has approved a new grant to support MECEG (Modern Economic Community Empowerment Group) in Shinyanga, led by our local representative William Shayo.
This project will provide 44 piglets to 20 vulnerable women and children, giving each household two female piglets, with one male piglet to be shared between every five families for reproduction. The aim is simple but powerful: to provide a stable income that can fund essentials such as school fees, food, and medical care—and to do so in a way that builds long-term resilience.
This is not MECEG’s first partnership with TDT. Their earlier work was well-executed, and our Project Officer personally visited participating families in December 2024. The economic benefits were clear, but so too was the boost in confidence and dignity among the women involved.
What sets this model apart is its built-in sustainability. The women will be trained in pig care and low-cost pen construction. Feed and veterinary support are included for the first seven months. And most importantly, the programme uses a “pass-on” model: as pigs reproduce, piglets will be given to other women, expanding the impact without further investment.
We’re proud to support MECEG and look forward to seeing the project unfold.
