The Challenge
Women and girls in Kitahana village face serious economic hardship due to limited employment opportunities and high school dropout rates caused by early pregnancy. Many young mothers and vulnerable women struggle to support themselves and their families. Although some women already have basic sewing skills, they lack the business training, equipment, and financial resources needed to turn those skills into sustainable livelihoods.

Our Solution

This project will train 30 beneficiaries—including 15 women aged 18–45 and 15 girls aged 15–22 who left school due to pregnancy—in tailoring and small business skills. Funding will support sewing equipment, materials, training, and other start-up costs, enabling participants to work together through a cooperative model and produce garments for sale in local markets.

The programme will run over 12 months. In the first six months, participants will receive professional tailoring trainingin garment making, design, and clothing repair, alongside business training covering pricing, record-keeping, and customer service. During the following six months, trainees will begin producing and selling garments, supported by peer mentorship where more experienced learners guide others. The group will also establish a cooperative structure and savings plan to support long-term sustainability.

The Lasting Impact
By developing practical skills and business confidence, the women and girls will be able to generate income, support their families, and build independent futures. The project aims for at least 80% of participants to be earning sustainable income within a year, with many establishing themselves as self-employed tailors. Over time, the cooperative will become a self-sustaining local enterprise, strengthening livelihoods and creating new opportunities for women in the community.
