TDT funds a number of school projects throughout Tanzania, including Ikimba Schools in Kagera Region. Recent projects include resources for a science laboratory at Izimbya School and building a new girls’ hostel at Tunamkumbuka Secondary School. We also support the transition to English-speaking secondary schooling through a project jointly funded with the Eddie Byers Fund and donations from Ruth and Ralph Isaacs.
The transition to secondary school is difficult for any child, but particularly in Tanzania, when they suddenly are supposed to start learning in English. From having a few teachers speaking Swahili to many new subjects in a new language this is a big challenge. Many students struggle to understand their teachers and start to drop behind and lose interest. Therefore we were delighted to receive a grant from the Eddie Byers Fund.
TDT has opened new donation pages with Virgin Money Giving, enabling easy, low-cost donations to TDT’s general funds, to support TDT campaigns for girls’ hostels and water, or to contribute to the fight against FGM
Congratulations to BTS members Hilary and Peter Bacon, back in Tanzania to extend their continuing personal commitment to supporting provision of computers within schools.
Tunamkumbuka, one of four ‘Ikimba Project Schools’ supported by TDT, was one of the most improved schools nationally last year. TDT was pleased to fund new desks and chairs to relieve pressure of numbers resulting from this success.
BTS members Hilary and Peter Bacon are visiting Tanzania as part of their continuing personal commitment to supporting provision of computers within Tanzanian schools.
On his second visit to the Ikimba schools, Jonathan caught up with old friends and discussed some great ideas for girls’ empowerment.
