(1) Dying for a drink, Dodoma
Two boys from Manda Village scrape the last bit of water from a dried-up river bed. In Tanzania gastro-intestinal diseases caused by dirty drinking dirty water account for 10% of deaths of children under 5.
The river near the village is very seasonal, and villagers compete for drinking water with wild animals including elephants. TDT is investigating a rainwater harvesting system linked to tank storage and the use of solar-powered water purifiers to protect the lives of small children who are particularly vulnerable to disease.

(2) Down by the riverside, Dodoma
In rural Tanzania rivers are a key part of daily life, used for drinking water, washing clothes, livestock, or just having a chat. But with climate change many rivers are beginning to dry up, resulting in the need to develop alternative supplies.
Chamwino Rural District, with a population of around 20,000, wants to establish Community Based Safe Drinking Water Centers, where people can access clean water free of charge.
At present those who want to reduce their reliance on the river have to dig their own wells which is inefficient or buy water from vendors at TZS 1,000 (30p) per 20 litre bucket which for poor families is unaffordable.
A communal effort is needed to resolve the problem, but this will require significant start-up capital. If you would like to donate to this or other TDT water projects please click here.
(3) Journey to school, Kagera
