Deaf young people in rural Tanzania often face severe barriers to education and employment. Many leave school early or have never received formal education, leaving them with very limited opportunities to earn a living. As a result, they are among the most marginalised members of their communities, and many families have little hope that they will be able to support themselves.
Women and girls in Kitahana village face serious economic hardship due to limited employment opportunities and high school dropout rates caused by early pregnancy. Many young mothers and vulnerable women struggle to support themselves and their families. Although some women already have basic sewing skills, they lack the business training, equipment, and financial resources needed to turn those skills into sustainable livelihoods
At Kitahana Secondary School, around 200 girls live in a simple “hostel” made from three converted classrooms. Without electricity, they struggle to study after dark—limiting their chances to prepare for crucial national exams and reach their full potential. By staying in hostels, girls avoid long walks to and from home in the dark when they are vulnerable, and they can focus on studying rather than domestic chores.
This project will install a solar lighting system in the three classroom dormitories, providing safe, reliable light for evening study. The system will include an inverter, wiring, and fittings, installed by a qualified local fundi. The school will cover installation labour costs, showing their strong local commitment.
